Symbols

  • The four figures on the outside are a bull, a lion, an eagle, and a man.
    • Each of them has with them a book.
    • Each of them has wings.
    • They rest on the clouds that frame the card.
    • This could represent the four Gospel writers: Luke, Mark, John, and Matthew (respectively).
  • The Inner “Wheel”
  • Around the wheel is a devil-like canine figure.
    • It looks like this figure is turning with the wheel (by the way its back is arched upwards)
  • Another figure is the serpent.
    • Temptation in Eden? Or knowledge?
  • On top of the wheel is a sphinx holding a sword.
    • The sphinx appears to have breasts—either androgynous or female.
    • Interestingly, the sphinx (apart from its headdress) matches the colour of the sky, almost like it’s supposed to blend in.
